Tropical Storm Lala is expected to intensify into a hurricane by Saturday morning as it approaches Hawaii's Big Island, according to the National Hurricane Center.[1] If the system makes landfall on the island, it would mark the first direct hurricane strike since 1871, when a Category 3 hurricane hit the northern side of the island.[1] The threat has prompted officials to issue hurricane warnings for the region.
As of late Friday morning, Lala was positioned approximately 340 miles southeast of Hawaii's southernmost point, with maximum sustained winds of 60 miles per hour.[1] The hurricane-force wind threshold begins at 74 miles per hour.[1] Meteorologist Vanessa Almanza noted this would represent a historic occurrence, stating it would be the "first time since satellites."[1] Parts of the Big Island face potential rainfall reaching 25 inches, along with risks of flash flooding and wildfires.[1]
State Representative Jeanné Kapela urged residents to take the storm seriously and relocate to safe areas before conditions deteriorate.[1] The warning comes as much of Hawaii continues recovery efforts from destructive March flooding.[1]
