The Purbeck region was once a major breeding ground for puffins in southern England, with approximately 80 birds nesting there during the 1950s 1. The population subsequently collapsed, dwindling to just three breeding pairs, and no chicks had been observed in the region for nearly three decades 1. This summer, volunteers documented six adult puffins at the site in April, and the parents of the young bird were recorded making regular feeding visits between May 29 and July 5 1.
Thirteen volunteers conducted 15 weeks of monitoring work during the summer months to track the birds 1. The National Trust installed motion-activated cameras powered by solar panels to document the colony's activity 1.
Richard Caldow commented on the significance of the discovery, stating: "Every chick matters. One puffling alone won't save this colony but one is a whole lot better news than none" 1.
