Cobild, the construction company behind a $400 million luxury development in Melbourne's Toorak backed by billionaire James Packer, paid over $500,000 to gangland figure Mick Gatto in what appears to be an effort to secure union support.[1] The payments comprised 13 separate transfers of $39,600 each, beginning in late 2022 and continuing until October 2025.[1]
The financial arrangement occurred during a period of significant upheaval within the Construction, Forestry and Maritime Employees' Union (CFMEU). The union was placed under administration in July 2024 following revelations about its connections to Gatto and other organized crime figures.[1] Cobild was formally announced as the official construction partner for the One Toorak Place project in February 2025.[1] The disclosure of these payments is expected to come under scrutiny during Australia's forthcoming royal commission inquiry into union corruption, with both the Labor Party and the Coalition having committed to launching such an investigation.[1]
Another construction firm, Elite Roads, also made payments to Gatto, beginning with an initial $30,000 transfer followed by regular $6,000 installments.[1]
