A study by Swansea University has found widespread violations of data protection regulations among licensed gambling websites in the United Kingdom. Researchers from the university's GREAT Centre tested 624 betting and casino operators and discovered that 86% were breaching GDPR requirements, a figure substantially higher than the 54% violation rate found across all website types.1
The investigation revealed systematic failures in how gambling sites obtain and manage user consent. Approximately two-thirds of operators began collecting user data before obtaining proper consent, while 24% provided no option to disable tracking software entirely.1 Additional compliance failures included 2% of websites offering no consent choice whatsoever, 60% using visual emphasis to promote privacy-unfriendly options, 29% defaulting to privacy-unfriendly settings, and 47% burying rejection options behind secondary layers.1
The UK Information Commissioner's Office acknowledged the findings and committed to enforcement action to ensure compliance with cookie regulations, noting it had previously compelled 95% of the country's top 1,000 websites to comply with cookie requirements.1 The regulator previously criticized gambling operator Sky Bet in 2024 for unlawfully sharing user data with advertising companies.1
