The Trump administration is broadening its diplomatic approach to break a deadlock with Iran by enlisting unlikely European intermediaries. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Austria's foreign minister on Tuesday in Washington and spoke with Greece's foreign minister on Wednesday, with both European officials subsequently calling Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Thursday.[1] While US officials denied requesting the Europeans to contact Iran or relay messages, a European diplomat with knowledge of the matter suggested the timing of the calls was not coincidental.[1]
The diplomatic maneuvers center on longstanding disputes over Hormuz Strait transit rights and regional stability.[1] The US and Iran have been at odds over the strait since February 28, a waterway that accounts for one-fifth of global oil trade.[1] Vice President JD Vance indicated the administration's priorities are maintaining low energy prices and preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.[1] Iran's foreign ministry has countered by accusing the United States and Israel of "illegal aggression," claiming Washington has violated a ceasefire agreement signed in June.[1]
