A Picasso etching titled "Torero" that was stolen from a Milwaukee art gallery in 2018 has been recovered.[1] Landlord Tim Detz discovered the work while clearing out a vacant apartment after a tenant's eviction, and it was subsequently identified as the piece reported missing by gallery owner Bill Derlind.[1] The etching, which bore a layer of dust when found, still retained a label from Derlind Fine Art Appraisals on its back.[1] The Milwaukee Police Department has taken custody of the artwork as the investigation proceeds.[1]
The recovered etching is one of only 30 known signed versions by Picasso.[1] At the time of the 2018 theft, the work was valued between $35,000 and $50,000.[1] Upon learning of the discovery, Derlind expressed his shock, stating: "I can't believe it. I was just blown away."[1] The statute of limitations for theft and property crimes typically extends to six years.[1]
