Umpire Doug Eddings ordered St. Louis Cardinals rookie pitcher Hancel Rincon to straighten his cap during Friday's game, citing a complaint from a Colorado batter, an incident that sparked objection to what managers viewed as overreach 1. Rincon, a 24-year-old Dominican pitcher making his major league debut, was wearing his cap tilted when Eddings intervened 1. Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol was ejected from the game after protesting the directive, noting that "plenty of guys that have worn it way more tilted," and citing examples including former pitchers Dontrelle Willis, CC Sabathia, and Pedro Strop 1.
The following day, players from both the Cardinals and Rockies responded by tilting their own caps during Saturday's contest as a form of protest against what they characterized as inappropriate umpire authority 1. Rockies catcher told MLB.com that he had not lodged a complaint with Eddings about Rincon's hat 1. The Cardinals defeated the Rockies 7-6 on Friday, with Ivan Herrera delivering a three-run home run in the ninth inning 1.
