An 18-year-old Belgian student named Kobe uncovered a trove of gold worth approximately €9 million while working on sewage construction at a former brewery in Sint-Gillis-Dendermonde, located about 30 kilometers northwest of Brussels.[1] The cache, deliberately concealed within sealed walls in the underground basement by brewery owner Theophilus Van Assche in the late 19th century, consisted of gold coins, gold bars, and numbered ingots.[1] The discovery was made on a Tuesday morning, prompting Kobe to remark, "It's just not something you expect when you're working on a regular Tuesday morning."[1]
The brewery, known as Brouwershuis, operated from 1899 to 1970.[1] Following the find, the gold was transferred to a secure facility in Brussels, where authorities began determining its rightful ownership.[1] According to Belgian law, a finder must wait at least five years for potential claimants to come forward before claiming the treasure.[1] Piet Buyse, a former local mayor, suggested the hidden gold reflected the brewery owner's family wealth, stating it "certainly stayed in the family. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they had decided to put at least some of it in gold, and then to hide it in a safe place."[1]
