BP has announced a partnership to develop the second phase of Venezuela's Loran offshore gasfield alongside two oil companies with ties to the Trump administration.[1] The collaboration involves the Qatar-based Al-Khayyat brothers' firm and the overseas investment arm of the UAE's national oil company.[1] BP's chief executive described the license as a significant step forward in the company's cooperation with Venezuela.[1]
The venture represents one of the first major foreign investment projects in Venezuela following the Trump administration's push for regime change.[1] The Qatari company's owners have previously worked with Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner on an Albanian resort development project.[1] The UAE's industrial minister Sultan Al Jaber committed in 2025 to increase his country's investment in the U.S. energy sector sixfold to $44 billion (£32.5 billion).[1] President Trump has called on foreign oil companies to invest "at least $100 billion" in developing Venezuela's petroleum resources.[1]
Venezuela's crude oil production has risen from approximately one million barrels per day to 1.2 million barrels daily, with exports to American refineries reaching their highest level since 2019.[1]
