Italian authorities have successfully recovered three French masterpieces stolen from a private museum near Parma in March 2024.[1] The recovered works include Cézanne's "Still Life with Cherries," valued at approximately $7 million; Renoir's "Fish," estimated at $3.5 million; and Matisse's "Bathers on a Terrace," worth $23,000.[1] The theft occurred during the night of March 22-23 at the Magnani Rocca Foundation, located about 12 miles from Parma, when two masked thieves entered through a window and completed the heist in less than three minutes.[1]
In a separate case, Brazilian authorities in São Paulo recovered eight Matisse illustrations stolen in December, with an estimated combined value of approximately $200,000.[1] The recovery led to the arrest of 44-year-old João Paulo Linhares de Araújo in Santo Bernardo do Campo, who was accused of storing the stolen Matisse works at his residence.[1] Brazilian police identified 53-year-old Laéssio Rodrigues de Oliveira as the mastermind behind the theft; Oliveira, regarded as one of Brazil's most notorious art thieves, was arrested in April.[1]
