A toxic gas leak at the Ferdous Steel Ship Breaking Yard in Sitakunda, southeastern Bangladesh, has claimed the lives of at least eight workers engaged in dismantling a decommissioned vessel.[1] According to police inspector Mohammed Alamgir, six workers were initially confirmed dead at the scene, with two additional deaths occurring during transportation.[1] Multiple others sustained injuries in the incident.[1]
The fatalities resulted from exposure to toxic gases emitted from the ship being dismantled, as authorities investigate both the cause of the leak and whether adequate safety measures were in place at the facility.[1] Bangladesh's shipbreaking industry is substantial, accounting for 36 percent of global ship recycling and generating annual revenues of approximately $2.646 billion.[1] Roughly 150 registered shipyards operate along a 20-kilometer stretch of coastline in the Sitakunda area.[1]
