Albania's ambassador to Britain has attacked right-wing politicians and media outlets for what he characterizes as an obsessive and disproportionate fixation on Albanian migration to the UK.[1] Ambassador Ulan Ferizi contends that while 12,658 Albanians arrived by small boat in 2022, this figure represented only approximately 1 percent of total long-term migration to the UK that year, and arrivals have since dropped sharply.[1]
Ferizi argues the continued emphasis on Albanian migrants obscures broader context around visa accessibility.[1] He points out that Albanian applicants between 2018 and 2025 faced a visa approval rate of 65.5 percent, significantly lower than the roughly 90 percent rate for other Western Balkan nations, suggesting disadvantaged individuals may be driven toward human traffickers as a consequence.[1] The ambassador also challenges claims made in media reporting, citing a 2024 Daily Telegraph article that asserted one in fifty Albanians in UK prisons, stating such figures lack adjustment for variables including age and gender.[1] According to Ferizi, over 70,000 Albanian visa applications have been rejected during this period.[1]
