这次盗窃涉及在名为《From Book to Museum》的展览中展出的作品。[1] 除已追回的马蒂斯作品外,五件坎迪多·波蒂纳里的作品仍未找到。[1]
Brazilian authorities have successfully recovered eight illustration works by French artist Henri Matisse that were stolen from a São Paulo library [1]. The pieces, valued at approximately $200,000, were taken on December 7, 2024, from the Biblioteca Mário de Andrade during an exhibition titled "From Book to Museum" [1]. Officers discovered the works at a residential property in São Bernardo do Campo, a suburb south of São Paulo, leading to the arrest of a 44-year-old suspect identified as João Paulo Linhares de Araujo [1].
The recovery marks significant progress in the investigation, which has resulted in at least four arrests to date [1]. However, five works by Brazilian artist Candido Portinari that were also stolen in the same theft remain unrecovered [1]. Art critics have described the stolen Matisse pieces as possessing incalculable cultural value [1].
