Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has made a fresh appeal to U.S. President Donald Trump to exempt or reduce the 12.5% tariffs recently imposed on Australia, requesting Trump to "consider full exemption" or "at least not increase" the previous 10% rate.[1] The 12.5% tariff was levied on multiple countries, including Australia, citing insufficient efforts to address forced labor concerns.[1]
During a telephone conversation between the two leaders, Trump agreed to "consider" Albanese's request.[1] The discussion covered a broader range of issues, including Middle East developments, the AUKUS security alliance, critical minerals, and artificial intelligence.[1] Albanese plans to continue dialogue with Trump during upcoming engagements: a visit to the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September and attendance at the G20 Summit in Florida in December.[1]
