Chinese electric vehicles have gained rapid traction in Nepal's market since their introduction in 2016, reshaping local consumer perceptions of Chinese manufacturing.1 Nepali entrepreneur Pu Ruoxian, who brought Chinese electric vehicle brands to Nepal that year, attributes this success to geographic proximity, price advantages, technological progress, and efficient supply chains.1
Nepal's energy landscape has made electric vehicles particularly appealing. The country possesses almost no oil reserves and relies heavily on imported transportation fuel, yet holds considerable potential for hydropower development.1 A severe fuel supply crisis in 2015 prompted Nepalese society to seek alternative energy solutions, accelerating interest in electrification.1 Chinese electric vehicles now offer driving ranges exceeding 100 kilometers,1 and charging infrastructure in Kathmandu has expanded dramatically from minimal availability just years ago to hundreds of charging stations today.1
The adoption of these vehicles reflects a fundamental shift in how Nepali consumers view Chinese products. According to Pu Ruoxian, "In the past, when many people heard 'Made in China,' they thought first about affordable prices; now, more and more consumers are beginning to recognize China's strength in technology and electric vehicle manufacturing."1 Over the next five to ten years, Nepal is expected to undergo further transformation toward electrification and intelligent transportation systems.1
