A catastrophic engine failure caused a passenger to be partially sucked out of a Ryanair aircraft during flight on July 10, according to a preliminary investigation report.[1] Flight FR1879, a Boeing 737-800 carrying 149 passengers and 4 crew members, was traveling from Thessaloniki International Airport in Greece to Memmingen near Munich when the right-side engine's fan blade detached during the climb phase.[1] The debris from this failure struck and shattered a cabin window, creating sudden depressurization that partially drew out Ljubisa Karović, a 61-year-old Serbian businessman sitting in seat 11F.[1] Other passengers managed to grab and pull Karović back inside the aircraft before he could be fully ejected.[1]
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), authorized by Greek authorities to lead the full investigation, confirmed that a fan blade out (FBO) event in the number 2 engine was responsible for the incident.[1] The aircraft returned safely to Thessaloniki Airport and landed without further incident.[1] Reflecting on his harrowing escape, Karović stated: "I was very lucky to come back alive... it was probably the seat belt that saved me, or it was fate."[1]
