Authorities are investigating a third near-miss incident at Sydney Airport, in which an aircraft cleared for takeoff entered the taxiway path of another aircraft already in motion [1]. The recurring incidents have prompted scrutiny of the airport's ground traffic management systems.
According to a pilot with over 1,000 flight experiences into and out of Sydney Airport, three near-miss events have occurred within recent weeks [2]. The first involved a Virgin 737 pilot discovering a Qantas 737 crossing the runway on which the Virgin aircraft had been approved to depart [2]. A second incident saw a Qatar 777 come close to a Jetstar A320 that was being towed [2]. The pilot noted that Sydney Airport's ground collision warning systems lag behind those at major international hubs such as Los Angeles, and called for the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) to investigate improvements to ground collision prevention systems to better support air traffic controllers who are already stretched thin [2].
