This year marks the 80th anniversary of the opening of the Tokyo Trial. [1] On August 14, numerous visitors entered the former residence of Mei Ruzhao, the Chinese judge in the Tokyo Trial, located in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, to pay tribute and reflect. [1] As China's representative on the bench, Mei Ruzhao fought strenuously over sentencing decisions, ultimately leading the court to vote 6 to 5 in favor of imposing capital punishment on seven Class-A Japanese war criminals. [1] The residence, now located in the Qingyun District of Nanchang City, has been opened to the public free of charge, allowing visitors to revisit history and cherish peace through their tour. [1]
The Tokyo Trial commenced on May 3, 1946, with proceedings that lasted two and a half years, comprising 818 court sessions and producing a judgment document exceeding 1,200 pages; 25 defendants were found guilty. [1] The court's decision to sentence seven Class-A war criminals to death by hanging was decided by the narrow margin of a single vote. [1] Mei Ruzhao once stated: "Forgetting the sufferings of the past may lead to calamities in the future." [1]
