Christians in Israel, comprising less than 2 percent of the population, have experienced escalating harassment and violence targeting their religious symbols, particularly since October 7, 2023.[1] According to data collected by the Religious Freedom Data Center, incidents in Jerusalem have nearly tripled when comparing the period four years ago to the most recent three months, with approximately one incident occurring daily, almost entirely attributed to Jewish nationalist actors.[1]
The violence has taken serious forms, including a physical attack on a nun in April, after which a Jewish man from a West Bank settlement was prosecuted.[1] In response to the deteriorating situation, the Israeli government appointed a new envoy for Christian affairs. George Dick, the newly appointed envoy, stated: "We believe that every incident against Christians is immoral, illegal, and should be prosecuted."[1] The government has also intensified policing and prosecution efforts in an attempt to improve interfaith coexistence.[1] The Religious Freedom Data Center, established by Hannah Arani, continues to document cases of harassment targeting the Christian community.[1]
