John Setka, the former leader of Australia's construction union, has been arrested and charged for a third time in connection with alleged threats directed at CFMEU administrators.[1] The 61-year-old was taken into custody on Friday morning and is scheduled to appear before Melbourne Magistrates' Court.[1] He faces multiple charges including using a telecommunications device to make threats, using a telecommunications device to offend or harass, and two counts of committing an indictable offense while on bail.[1]
This latest charge follows previous arrests in the matter. Setka was first arrested in November 2024 and faced seven charges related to using communication tools to threaten, harass, and offend individuals.[1] A second round of charges was laid in February relating to alleged threats made to CFMEU officials at Christmas.[1] A restraining order was issued against Setka on July 19, 2024.[1] Police established Operation Hawk in mid-2024 to investigate the allegations.[1]
When responding to the accusations, Setka dismissed concerns about his conduct, stating: "People should just toughen up and drink a bit of concrete and harden up a bit … It is the building industry."[1] He has also claimed that the prosecution is politically motivated.[1]
