Shenzhen's Dapeng New District has organized a summer research camp titled "Walking into Shenzhen's Red Villages," bringing young students on a thematic journey called "Gazing at the Stars, Looking Toward the Future." [1] The program combines red revolutionary education with astronomical science initiation, allowing adolescents to engage in dialogue between historical exploration and cosmic discovery. [1]
Students visited revolutionary historical sites including Xigong Village and Egong Village to trace the footsteps of the East River Column guerrillas. [1] The research itinerary spans multiple locations across the district, including Dapeng Fortress, Yuan Geng's ancestral residence, and Wang Tongshan Academy. [1] Simultaneously, students conducted stargazing observations, taking advantage of Xiyong's distinction as China's first and Asia's second internationally recognized dark sky community. [1] The observation points included Shenzhen Astronomical Observatory and the rooftop of Xiyong Starry Sky Hotel, where participants used professional telescopes to observe stars, nebulae, and star clusters. [1]
Student Yan Yimeng reflected on the experience: "Textbook knowledge tends to be theoretical, but this experience allowed us to see with our own eyes the real celestial bodies and constellation patterns recorded in the sky." [1] Looking forward, Dapeng New District is developing a diverse ecosystem around its dark sky designation, encompassing stargazing research programs, astronomical observation facilities, star-themed camping, and specialty accommodations.
