Sixty young people from Shenzhen's Dapeng New District completed an immersive red education summer camp that connected them with the legacy of the East River Column, a guerrilla force that operated during China's anti-Japanese war period.[1] The program concluded on the afternoon of August 13, 2024, at the Wang Tongshan Academy in Dapeng New District, with participants traversing three red heritage routes and visiting 15 historical sites over two days and one night.[1]
The East River Column holds particular significance to the region's history: 2,583 officers and soldiers from the unit once departed from the Shayu Bay coast by ship during a strategic retreat.[1] Through immersive exploration and scenario-based activities, the young participants were divided into six research groups that examined the East River Column's legacy from different angles.[1] Each group independently reached the same conclusion—that the spirit of the East River Column and the spirit of Shenzhen Special Economic Zone are fundamentally connected and represent a continuous historical thread.[1] The six groups produced research reports that articulated this internal link between the two eras.
The program was guided by the Shenzhen Committee for Caring for the Next Generation, organized by the Personnel and Organization Bureau of Dapeng New District, and implemented by the Southern Metropolitan Daily.[1] Related coverage and photo galleries from the event accumulated more than 500,000 clicks.[1]
