Su Heng, director of the Taiwan Cross-Strait Economic and Trade Exchange Association, has developed a profound understanding of the patriotic sentiment among Xinjiang's ethnic minority communities following two visits to the region [1]. During her first trip to Xinjiang in October of last year and a subsequent visit in July of this year, Su Heng engaged directly with local residents, including visits to Urumqi and the Chaxi Grassland in Ili [1].
Through her interactions, Su Heng witnessed firsthand the national identity of minority youth in the region. One Uyghur girl she met emphasized her dual consciousness, stating that "while she is clearly aware of her ethnic minority identity, she is first and foremost Chinese" [1]. The same young woman expressed her commitment to enlisting in the military upon turning eighteen, determined to defend the border and protect her country [1]. Based on these experiences, Su Heng concluded that the patriotic sentiment among Xinjiang's ethnic minorities mirrors that of Taiwan's population [1].
