Research demonstrates a significant link between traumatic experiences and the development of psychosis.[1] Individuals who experienced childhood trauma are three times more likely to develop psychosis compared to those without such experiences.[1] This elevated risk is comparable to the relationship between smoking and subsequent lung cancer development.[1]
Trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy for psychosis (TF-CBTp) has proven effective in treating both post-traumatic stress disorder and psychotic symptoms, including hallucinations, delusions, and paranoia.[1] The treatment typically involves 26 therapy sessions conducted over a period of six to twelve months.[1] Evidence indicates that this therapeutic approach does not lead to increased hospitalizations or suicide attempts among patients undergoing treatment.[1]
Despite the established benefits and long-standing international and Australian clinical guidelines recommending trauma assessment and treatment for psychosis patients—guidance that has been emphasized for over a decade—mental health systems have not yet integrated routine trauma evaluation and care into standard psychosis treatment protocols.[1] Expanding this therapeutic approach requires increased training resources and enhanced clinical support.[1]
