Dust and sand storms are becoming more frequent across Australia, serving as visible indicators of a shifting climate.[1] These severe weather events occur when strong winds lift sand and dust particles into the atmosphere, predominantly originating from arid regions, with Australia's storms primarily sourced from the Lake Eyre Basin in the country's interior and central areas.[1] Recent evidence has identified a third dust pathway extending from the Lake Eyre Basin to North Queensland and the Northern Territory.[1]
The impacts of these storms are substantial and widespread. Following the 2009 "Red Dawn" dust storm, New South Wales farmers spent approximately 5 million Australian dollars rebuilding their farms.[1] Beyond agriculture, dust storms damage infrastructure and threaten public health. Research has demonstrated that dust reduces solar panel electricity generation by approximately 4.5 percent monthly.[1] The 2017-19 "Tinderbox drought" period witnessed dust storms coinciding with the Black Summer bushfires,[1] while more recent occurrences have affected Sydney, which was engulfed in red dust in 2025, alongside severe storms experienced by miners in the Northern Territory and residents of Port Pirie in South Australia.[1]
As global temperatures continue to rise, these dust and sand storms are expected to become increasingly frequent, intensifying threats to transportation networks, infrastructure, energy systems, and public health across the continent.[1]
