The European Broadcasting Union has enacted new regulations for the Eurovision Song Contest in response to mounting tensions over participating nations' participation and hosting responsibilities.[1] Under the updated rules, countries currently engaged in armed conflict or experiencing sensitive geopolitical situations will be prohibited from hosting the competition.[1] Should a nation affected by conflict win the contest, the EBU will commission an independent security assessment to determine whether hosting is feasible; if deemed unsafe, the organization will designate an alternative host country.[1]
The policy changes follow significant withdrawals ahead of the 2026 contest, with Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland, Slovenia, and Iceland announcing their departure from the competition.[1] Meanwhile, the EBU has expanded its membership to include Canada, which has achieved full member status and will participate in the 2026 edition.[1] Looking further ahead, Bulgaria will host the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest, with four cities—Burgas, Plovdiv, Sofia, and Varna—competing for hosting rights.[1] As of the announcement, only 19 of the more than 40 countries that typically participate have confirmed their participation for 2027.[1]
