A wearable radiation-protection vest developed by Israeli-American startup StemRad has completed a successful flight test to the Moon and back aboard NASA's uncrewed Artemis I mission.[1] The AstroRad vest was designed to shield astronauts from hazardous solar radiation during deep space exploration.
Analysis of flight data revealed that the vest's radiation-protection capabilities matched those of the Orion spacecraft's built-in shelter system.[1] This achievement offers a promising solution to address the risk of solar particle storms—such as the intense proton event that occurred in August 1972, which exposed astronauts to radiation levels capable of increasing cancer risk or triggering acute radiation sickness.[1] Led by founders Jordan Houri and Oren Milstein, StemRad has demonstrated a practical approach to protecting crew members during future lunar and Mars missions.[1]
