British maritime risk company Ambrey has been hired to manage the oil spill from the Russian-flagged tanker Caroline Bezengi, which ran aground near Qabiliyah Island off southwestern Oman following an explosion in early June 2024.[1] The 247-meter vessel, carrying more than 800,000 barrels of crude oil, is part of Russia's shadow fleet and has been subject to sanctions imposed by Britain and the European Union.[1]
The oil slick has already spread hundreds of kilometers from the initial grounding site, reaching the Omani coast at Ras Madrakah, more than 200 kilometers away, with projections suggesting further northward expansion of over 100 kilometers toward Masirah Island.[1] The spill threatens a marine protected area containing coral reefs, seagrass beds, endangered sea turtles, migratory bird breeding grounds, and the habitat of Arabian Sea humpback whales.[1] Ambrey personnel have already boarded the vessel to assess the situation and conduct stabilization work, though they face substantial obstacles from monsoon weather conditions and limited local infrastructure.[1]
According to Greenpeace activist Hanen Keskes, the migration of the oil from offshore waters to the coastline is deeply concerning, as it significantly complicates cleanup efforts beyond what offshore containment would entail.[1] Keskes further warned that "even if the oil slick is controlled and removed, the environmental impacts will persist for years."[1]
