China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment, together with five other departments, has jointly released the "Ecological Protection Fifteenth Five-Year Plan," establishing ambitious targets to address the nation's environmental challenges over the coming decade [1]. The plan sets out to effectively reverse the trend of biodiversity loss by 2030, while continuously optimizing ecological spatial patterns and steadily improving ecological quality [1].
A key component of the strategy involves sustained implementation of the "Green Shield" ecological environmental inspection program, which will achieve comprehensive monitoring coverage of protected areas at all levels and ecological protection red lines [1]. The plan also emphasizes deepening the application of emerging technologies such as satellite remote sensing to enhance the capacity for monitoring ecological quality and biological diversity [1]. According to Vice Minister of Ecology and Environment and Director of the National Nuclear Safety Administration Dong Baotong, the ecological protection tasks during the fifteenth five-year period are more demanding, with higher requirements placed on implementation [1].
Looking ahead to 2035, the plan envisions the full establishment of an intelligent and efficient ecological protection and restoration monitoring system, with the modernization of ecological governance systems and capabilities essentially realized [1].
