South Korea's Incheon International Airport has claimed the title of world's busiest airport for international passenger traffic, marking a historic milestone for the facility since its opening in 2001.[1] During the first half of 2026, the airport handled 38.39 million international passengers, a 6.3% increase compared to the same period the previous year, surpassing London's Heathrow Airport, which processed 37.79 million passengers, and Singapore's Changi Airport, which served 34.53 million passengers.[1]
The surge in traffic reflects significant shifts in global aviation patterns driven by geopolitical developments. Analysts attribute the growth partly to disruptions in Middle Eastern aviation hubs caused by tensions between the United States and Iran, which have redirected connecting passenger flows through East Asian gateways.[1] International visitors now account for 39.3% of Incheon's passenger base, up from 35.2% for the full year 2025, with the second quarter reaching a record 44.4% share of foreign travelers, predominantly from China and Japan.[1]
Infrastructure expansion has positioned the airport to capitalize on this demand surge. A four-stage expansion project completed at the end of 2024 increased the airport's annual capacity to 106 million passengers.[1] Incheon currently serves 101 airlines operating flights to 183 cities worldwide, including 158 international passenger destinations.[1]
