The European Central Bank has released a new survey revealing that cash continues to dominate payment acceptance across the euro area.[1] According to the findings, 92% of physical retailers in the euro area accept cash payments, marking an increase from 90% in 2024 and reversing the declining trend observed during the pandemic period.[1] The survey encompassed 8,205 companies across 21 euro area countries and was conducted between February and April 2026.[1]
While cash acceptance has strengthened, other payment methods have also gained ground. Mobile payment acceptance surged significantly to 68%, up from 36%, demonstrating rapid growth in digital transaction adoption.[1] Card payments maintained stable acceptance at 88%.[1] In response to shifting consumer preferences, 25% of euro area companies have implemented measures to promote digital payment options, and 13% have introduced self-checkout terminals.[1] Retailers cite privacy and reliability as primary reasons for continuing to accept cash payments.[1]
