India's Parliament concluded its monsoon session on August 13 after 19 days of proceedings marked by significant political friction and disruptions.[1] Both houses formally adjourned, having convened from July 20 through August 13 amid escalating tensions between the government and opposition parties.[1]
The session was dominated by massive youth protests triggered by a medical entrance examination leak in July, which prompted demonstrators to demand the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the examination irregularities.[1] Police deployed batons and tear gas to disperse protesters on the opening day of the session.[1] The controversy extended into parliamentary proceedings, where opposition leader Rahul Gandhi declined an offer from Home Minister Amit Shah to hold a debate on the matter.[1] Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju blamed the opposition for "evading discussion" and claimed they obstructed legislative productivity through multiple walkouts and demonstrations.[1]
Beyond the examination scandal, the session was punctuated by protests concerning police conduct and allegations of misappropriated donations to Ram Temple construction.[1] Additionally, a one-day shutdown occurred between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu over water distribution disputes in the Cauvery River basin.[1]
