Logan City Mayor Jon Raven has criticized a proposed leagues club by the North Queensland Cowboys in the Holmview suburb south of Brisbane, condemning it as a "pokie palace" that would drain millions from the local community.[1] The NRL club's project is planned to include 100 poker machines, which the mayor argues would extract more than AUD 13 million annually from Logan residents' pockets, despite the club's commitment to return only AUD 100,000 in the first year.[1] According to the club's pledges, after four years it has committed to return AUD 1.5 million to the community.[1]
The facility is designed to offer more than gambling infrastructure, featuring a 400-seat restaurant, community event spaces, a café, children's play area, and a Cowboys merchandise store.[1] Cowboys Chief Executive Tim Follett stated that the project remains in its early stages and contended the venue would serve members and supporters while creating local employment opportunities and supporting community initiatives.[1]
