North Stradbroke Island in Moreton Bay has reinvented itself from a sand extraction site into a vibrant artistic community.[1] The island, which is home to just 2,156 residents as of 2021,[1] will showcase this creative transformation during the fifth edition of the Straddie Arts Trail, running August 14-16.[1] More than 70 artists from the island will display their work across 33 locations during the three-day event.[1]
The commitment to fostering the arts on the island has been bolstered by recent infrastructure support. The North Stradbroke Community Pottery Centre secured a 10-year lease this week,[1] cementing the island's cultural institutions. State MP Amanda Stoker highlighted the broader significance of the pottery centre, stating: "It's not just a place to make pottery. It's a place where women from all different walks of life come together, mentor and support each other."[1] For those visiting from the mainland, adult return ferry tickets to Cleveland cost $23, while a one-way vehicle crossing is $83.[1] Local public transport fares are 50 cents per ride.[1]
