Sixty young residents of Shenzhen participated in a public research and study summer camp on August 12, organized by Dapeng New Area, to retrace the historical path of the East River Column during the anti-Japanese war period [1]. The educational initiative guided participants through seven red heritage sites across the district, including the former residence of Li Huiqun, the former headquarters of the East River Column, and the East River Column Northern Retreat Memorial Park [1].
Through visits to these locations and interactive activities such as letter-writing and historical reenactments, the young participants learned about key figures in the region's revolutionary history [1]. Among them was Huang He, known as the "revolutionary mother," who sent three of her sons to join the revolutionary cause and devoted all her resources to support the East River Column [1]. The research route also encompassed the Tuyangyang community, the Shayuyong coastal reception area, the "Wanlong" commercial shop, and the Shayuyong post office [1].
The commemorative journey gains particular significance as 2026 marks the 80th anniversary of the East River Column's northern retreat, when 2,583 soldiers departed from the beach [1]. Notable cultural figures facilitated a maritime rescue operation during the war that was praised by author Mao Dun as "the greatest rescue work since the beginning of the anti-Japanese war" [1].
