A man in Hopkins, Minnesota fatally shot his wife and child at a home-based childcare facility before turning the gun on himself, authorities said.[1] Police responded to the scene at 200 Tyler Avenue North shortly after 9 a.m. on Wednesday and discovered three bodies—two adults and one child—at Brown Bear Childcare.[1]
Six other children who were present at the facility were safely evacuated and reunited with their families without injury.[1] The childcare center, which has been licensed by the state since 2019, has a capacity of 10 children.[1] Hopkins Police Chief Dean Holmes described the tragedy as a worst-case scenario, stating: "There's no worse scenario than this, where you drop off your child somewhere you think is safe, and you get that phone call."[1]
Hopkins Mayor Patrick Hanlon expressed the community's shock over the incident, saying: "There are no strangers in this community so … we are all reeling from this tragic incident."[1] Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey reached out to Hopkins leadership to offer support.[1] Hopkins is a community of approximately 19,000 people.[1]
