A public art installation marking Mozart's 270th anniversary in Salzburg has been cut short following the disappearance of more than 200 golden Mozart figurines from Mirabell Garden.[1] Of the 320 statues originally displayed, 210 went missing, forcing organizers to end the garden exhibition prematurely.[1] The figurines, each standing 50 centimeters tall, are estimated to have been worth approximately €90 per piece, bringing total losses to around €20,000.[1]
Artist Ottmar Hörl characterized the incident as an organized theft operation.[1] The manufacturer is currently on summer break and unable to rapidly produce replacement pieces.[1] While the Mirabell Garden display has been terminated early, some of the figurines remain on view at the Mozart Museum and Mozart's Birthhouse through the end of August.[1]
