Greenland's government has compelled Greenland Energy, a US oil company with Trump administration ties, to postpone its Arctic drilling operations due to incomplete environmental and social impact assessments.[1] The company had planned to begin drilling before the end of 2025, but the project has now been pushed back to winter 2027 at the earliest.[1] This delay contradicts earlier projections from Jeff Landry, Trump's special envoy, who declared in May that "we could achieve barrel production in about 10 months."[1]
Greenland's government stated that "the necessary regulatory procedures cannot be completed, and therefore the necessary approvals cannot be obtained before the planned start of drilling."[1]
The regulatory setback has had immediate financial consequences.[1] Greenland Energy's stock price fell by more than one-third following the announcement of the postponement.[1] The company had raised $60 million in exchange for a majority stake in the project.[1]
The drilling site is located at the Jameson Block, a protected wetland that is home to rare bird species and musk oxen.[1] Kenneth Griffin acquired a 9 percent stake in Greenland Energy in April.[1]
