The United States and Iraq have agreed to scale down counterterrorism operations throughout 2024, with American forces on track to fully withdraw from Iraq by September 30, marking the end of the military presence that began with the 2003 invasion.[1] Iraqi Prime Minister Al-Zaidi and US Central Command Commander Cooper met to confirm the September 30 deadline as the final date for completing the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS military mission and troop departure.[1]
The US military presence peaked at over 170,000 troops in 2007, before the last combat forces withdrew in December 2011.[1] However, the emergence of ISIS prompted American forces to return in 2014, and the coalition military operations continued until 2021.[1] Currently, approximately 2,500 American soldiers remain in Iraq conducting training and counterterrorism operations.[1] Al-Zaidi simultaneously set the same September 30 deadline for non-state armed groups to disarm.[1]
