China's Southern Power Grid Company reported on August 12 that power consumption across five southern provinces and regions—Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou, and Hainan—reached record peaks on more than 20 occasions throughout the year.[1] On August 11 at 5:16 p.m., the grid's maximum load surged to 278 million kilowatts, while purchases of spot electricity from the State Grid via inter-provincial transactions reached a peak capacity of 1.96 million kilowatts, with total electricity volume of 11.02 million kilowatt-hours for the day.[1]
To ensure stable power supply amid mounting demand, the Southern Power Grid has implemented multiple measures including accelerating the completion of key power plants and optimizing dispatch operations.[1] The company has prioritized the timely commissioning of critical generation facilities such as Guangdong's Taipingshan Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2 and Hainan's third nuclear power unit.[1] Additionally, through refined dispatch optimization, the grid has achieved full-capacity operation of standby coal-fired power plants in Guangdong, enabling the system to meet surging electricity consumption.[1]
