Commercial shipping costs through the Panama Canal have escalated sharply, driven by a combination of Middle East conflict and drought conditions linked to El Niño.[1] A container vessel recently paid approximately $4 million in queue-jumping fees, more than double the average auction price from the preceding week, marking a historic high for expedited passage.[1]
The canal authority has implemented capacity restrictions in response to falling water levels. Ships now face waiting times of around 10 days, the longest backlog recorded since May.[1] The authority has begun auctioning priority passage slots, with opening bids starting at approximately $15,000 for smaller cargo ships and $55,000 for larger vessels.[1] Additionally, the canal authority announced plans to limit vessel draft depth during late August and early September.[1]
Geopolitical disruptions in the Middle East have intensified demand for the waterway. Escalating tensions have effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb, forcing shipping companies to reroute through Panama instead.[1] Traffic through the canal increased by 5 percent from October through June, with an average of 35 vessels transiting daily.[1]
