Taiwan's Foreign Ministry rejected China's objections to the island's participation in the Pacific Islands Forum leadership summit scheduled for late August in Palau. [1] Taiwan has been invited to attend the annual leaders' meeting, which will take place from August 30 to September 4. [1]
China's Foreign Ministry had urged the Pacific Islands Forum secretariat to uphold the "One China" principle and handle Taiwan-related issues appropriately. [1] In response, Taiwan's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hsiao Kuang-wei stated that the Republic of China (Taiwan) is a sovereign and independent nation that maintains no subordinate relationship with the People's Republic of China, and that Taiwan's participation in international organizations constitutes a legitimate right grounded in sovereignty. [1] According to the spokesperson, China has no authority to obstruct this participation. [1]
Taiwan has participated in the Pacific Islands Forum under the name "Taiwan/Republic of China" since 1993. [1] The Foreign Ministry further emphasized that UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 makes no mention of Taiwan and does not recognize Taiwan as part of the People's Republic of China. [1]
