Taiwanese academics at a cross-strait relations forum on August 12, 2025, emphasized that Taiwan must bolster its defense capabilities as tensions between the two sides persist [1]. The scholars highlighted that the root cause of escalating cross-strait tensions stems from Beijing's continued refusal to renounce the use of force to resolve the Taiwan question [1].
Addressing the Trump administration's expectations for Taiwan, the experts identified three key priorities: relocating advanced semiconductor production ecosystems to the United States, increasing procurement and investment in America, and enhancing Taiwan's self-defense capacity [1]. According to one scholar, "The third point is that the United States cares about Taiwan's commitment and capacity enhancement in self-defense" [1].
The academics stressed that establishing a minimum national security consensus requires several components, including ensuring citizens' voting choices remain free from Beijing's interference, securing public support for defense reforms, conducting cross-strait exchanges on the basis of equal dignity and transparency, and strengthening Taiwan's international connections [1]. The forum was organized by the Taiwan Central Area Professors' Association and the Institute of Cross-Strait Relations, and was held at the National Taiwan University Alumni Center in Taipei [1].
