Europe's largest travel company Tui reported a significant decline in profitability for the third quarter, attributing the downturn to geopolitical tensions and economic pressures affecting consumer behavior.[1] Pre-tax profit for the April-to-June period fell 43% to €153 million from €267 million in the same period last year.[1] The number of customers served dropped 3% to just under 10 million during the quarter.[1]
The Iran conflict has proven particularly costly for Tui, with the company sustaining €60 million in losses stemming from the regional tensions.[1] Two cruise ships—Mein Schiff 4 and Mein Schiff 5—were stranded for twelve weeks due to the conflict, incurring €40 million in costs and necessitating the repatriation of 5,000 passengers.[1] The company's marketing and aviation division swung from a €50 million profit to a €17 million loss during the third quarter.[1]
Despite these headwinds, Tui's leadership expressed cautiously optimistic signals about demand recovery. Chief Executive Sebastian Ebel stated that "travel remains highly relevant to people's lives, but the timing of travel decisions has shifted."[1] The company noted that demand had begun to strengthen in recent weeks as the summer holiday season approached.[1]
