Australian scientists have identified a concerning new risk in the country's battle against H5N1 bird flu: the virus could potentially exchange genetic material with local bird flu viruses to create novel strains.[1] CSIRO researchers have detected at least 6-7 independent introduction events originating from Heard Island, located approximately 4,100 kilometers from Perth.[1] The H5N1 virus, composed of eight separate genetic segments as an RNA virus, possesses the capacity to generate new variants through genetic reassortment.[1]
The pathogen has already established transmission among local bird species, with highly similar genomes identified in silver gulls and crested terns across South Australia and Victoria.[1] According to Dr. Frank Wong, "when the virus enters a new region and acquires gene segments from local viruses, it may provide novel genotypes with better fitness to host species in that region."[1] Scientists warn that such genetic recombination could pose an extinction-level impact on rare and endangered bird species in Australia.[1]
Current vaccination strategies offer limited protection for wild populations. Dr. Debbie Eagles explained that existing vaccines require two doses and cannot be deployed for large-scale wild bird protection, restricting their use to threatened species that can be captured.[1]
