Alexander Andruska, the former chief financial officer of failed Australian pub magnate Jon Adgemis, testified in federal court revealing how Adgemis used company funds to sustain a lavish lifestyle, ultimately precipitating the collapse of his hotel empire and accumulating $1.8 billion in debt.[1] Adgemis declared bankruptcy in October of last year.[1]
During court proceedings, evidence emerged that one of Adgemis's companies, JAGA Group Constructions, obtained a $77 million Goods and Services Tax refund through what prosecutors allege was a fraudulent tax scheme.[1] The Australian Tax Office is investigating approximately $1 billion in related expenditures connected to these transactions.[1]
Andruska characterized the GST refund as essential to the company's survival, stating: "I do not think the company would have been able to trade at all but for the $77 million".[1] He further testified that the business operated under constant financial strain, explaining that "It was always under financial stress because Jon would always overcommit".[1]
The Public Hospitality Group, established in 2021 under Adgemis's direction, acquired 22 properties before the collapse.[1] Despite attempts to stabilize the empire—including a $400 million rescue financing package from Deutsche Bank in early 2024[1]—the mounting liabilities proved insurmountable. Andruska's own experience illustrates the broader pattern of financial mismanagement: he loaned money to Adgemis in 2016, which remains outstanding.[1]
