Iran has conducted successive waves of drone and missile strikes against three U.S. military bases in Jordan over a five-day period, significantly draining American air defense resources.[1] On July 17, a missile breached defensive systems and struck a prefabricated structure at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, killing three American soldiers and wounding more than 100 others.[1]
The intensity of these attacks has strained U.S. munitions supplies. The Department of Defense has expended more than 1,500 Patriot interceptor missiles, leaving an inventory of fewer than 1,700 units remaining.[1] U.S. production capacity for 2025 is projected at approximately 600 interceptor missiles annually.[1] During the week of these attacks, American forces launched roughly 50 Patriot interceptor missiles daily, with each missile costing approximately $4 million.[1]
Despite the scale of interceptions, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged the penetration of defenses, stating: "We shot down nearly all of the missiles—one got through."[1] However, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had claimed on April 8 that Iran's missile program was "functionally destroyed."[1] That assessment followed extensive bombing campaigns conducted by the United States and Israel against Iranian underground facilities over a five-week period in April.[1]
Iran has progressively refined its attack tactics by studying Russian military strategies employed during the Ukraine conflict, enabling the Iranian military to adjust methods to overcome American air defenses more effectively.[1]
