A survey released by the European Council on Foreign Relations reveals a notably skeptical outlook among Germans toward China compared to their European counterparts.[1] According to the poll, 40% of German respondents view China as a competitor, while 9% regard it as an adversary in conflict.[1] This skepticism is considerably more pronounced than in other European nations—Spain shows only 14% viewing China as a competitor and 4% as a conflict adversary, while Italy registers 19% and 5% respectively.[1] France falls between these positions, with 35% seeing China as a competitor and 8% as a conflict adversary.[1]
The heightened German skepticism extends across the country's major political movements, with supporters of both the Christian Democratic Union and the Social Democratic Party registering no less than 60% agreement that China represents either a competitor or conflict adversary.[1] The think tank attributes this distinctive German perspective to the significant economic impact China's rise poses for Germany.[1] Notably, only 35% of German respondents regard China as a strategic partner requiring cooperation—substantially lower than the 56% in Spain and 51% in Italy who hold this view.[1]
