The underlying circumstances that prompted Pudaruth's assault emerged during legal proceedings.[1] McGhee had requested the woman's phone number and sent her multiple inappropriate text messages, including "Hi sweetie, will we see you this evening?" and "love you, Colin," while also presenting her with a $100 fuel card and expressing his affection through physical contact.[1] Pudaruth, motivated by a desire to protect his girlfriend's sister, walked up to McGhee and pushed him over with both hands.[1] During the incident, he also took McGhee's white hat and whistle.[1]
Pudaruth was sentenced to 10 months of intensive supervision and ordered to pay $400 for theft.[1] His lawyer, Mark Andrews, stated that "He'd like to extend his sincere apologies to Mr McGhee for the harm caused to him."[1] Meanwhile, the Western Australia Police Internal Affairs Unit has opened an investigation into McGhee's conduct.[1]
