Brian Smith, a former Australian rugby union international and prominent rugby league player, has died at age 59 from aggressive cancer.[1] Smith represented Australia in six Test matches, primarily during the inaugural 1987 Rugby World Cup, and also earned nine Test caps for Ireland between 1989 and 1991.[1] His professional career extended to rugby league, where he played 37 matches for Balmain Tigers and six matches for Easts, now known as the Sydney Roosters.[1]
In recent years, Smith transitioned to coaching, joining Scots Academy in Sydney in 2015, where he served as rugby coach and director of sport for the final decade of his career.[1] His impact on younger players was widely recognized; Wallabies player Angus Bell paid tribute, stating: "He was my coach in GPS, and NSW twos. I was 16 and fair to say that I wouldn't have played anywhere near as good without him."[1] Smith is survived by his wife Lisa and three children, Ruby, Santana, and Chilli.[1]
